Carlos, Kibbles and Their People

IMG_6860

We have a sweet dog who has kept me going through the loss of a parent, who has lovingly watched over our grandchildren from their infancy and who, just as your dog does for you, loves us unfailingly. Lexi is, most of the time, a well behaved dog.

One weekend, though, we boarded her at our trusted vet’s kennel while we worked with a bride in Kansas City. Upon our return, Hannah informed us that Lexi had figured out how to undo the clasp on the doors and had treated herself to free roam of the place on Saturday after staff went home. Instead of delivering this news with disdain, Hannah smiled her pretty, slightly shy smile. Her gentleness allowed us to feel okay about our dog’s misbehavior. And I’ve always remembered that.

Hannah, a beautiful young woman, is married to her high school sweetheart, Tyler. And Carlos and Kibbles round out their cute family.

Hannah and Tyler could have easily missed meeting each other. Hannah had always lived in Derby, KS and attended Derby schools. She moved right before her senior year in high school. “A tough time to move!” I commented. “It was hard. But it worked out,” she said with that sweet smile, and glanced at Tyler, whom she met during their shared senior year.

Tyler is a quiet guy who loves the outdoors. He is a fire sprinkler installer. And this, if you have ever lived through a fire, you realize is a hugely important job.

Hannah loves that Tyler enjoys the outdoors. And though Tyler appreciates the same quality in Hannah, his favorite thing about her is her eyes. They love hanging out together, especially outdoors. They love riding horses. But even a walk outside with their pals Carlos and Kibbles makes them happy.

Carlos is a lap dog, preferring to stay near his people. Kibbles, though, is spunky and outgoing and will gladly leave Hannah and Tyler for a bit if a good squirrel chase is in the offering.

I know Lexi is in good hands with Hannah. And that means the world to me. We should all be so lucky as to have a Hannah in our lives. I know that’s how Carlos and Kibbles feel. And Tyler, too.

When You Marry Your Best Friend

Seventeen years ago Melisa and Javier met at a birthday party he was throwing for a co-worker of theirs. This was a significant party: sixteen years ago this month Melisa and Javier got married.

Family-Portrait-Photography-in-Wichita_0588

The couple celebrated their sixteenth anniversary earlier this month by taking a weekend getaway to a bed and breakfast- something they like to do.

They have three children, Bryce, Ella and Daniel.

Family-Portrait-Photography-in-Wichita_0590

Bryce is a “band geek,” can play several musical instruments and would like to be a music teacher one day. Daniel is a “gamer,” who enjoys his x-box and tablet and would like to be a photographer. Ella is a dancer who has danced for 7 of her 9 years and would like to be a teacher. The family shares their home with their three dogs, Sissy, Snowball and Tuck and their guinea pig, Buzz. Most of the time every one gets along pretty well. 🙂

I know that Bryce is fond of pancakes and during our shoot with the family, I revealed our family secret for particularly fluffy pancakes: add carbonated soda instead of milk to the batter. We often use sugar-free peach flavored carbonated water. Colorless is best. The carbonation works wonders to raise the cakes to fluffy treats.

Family-Portrait-Photography-in-Wichita_0592

The guys in the family like to camp and fish. But they- all three- are good about spending time with mom.

Family-Portrait-Photography-in-Wichita_0591

The girls in the family enjoy shopping and scrapbooking, though Ella is a bit of a Daddy’s girl.

Melisa works as a para-professional in the same school her daughter attends. She is also a Mary Kay Cosmetics consultant who would be happy to help you feel and look your lovliest.  Melisa’s Mary Kay Page Javier is a manager at Spirit AerosSystems. This is a local family with deep-running ties to the community, having always lived in Wichita. They were a delight during their photo shoot. This is a family who laughs together and enjoys one another’s company.

But what I love most about this family is that, at it’s heart, is the love of two clear soul mates. “My favorite thing about Javier is that he works really hard to provide for his family. No matter what, he loves me and puts me above all else. He is my best friend!!!!”

As a woman who is also blessed enough to be married to her best friend- I know this is the best way to go. And I know that more happy years are in store for this couple and their whole family. Because when you go through life surrounded by those you love, you are waaaayyyyyy ahead of the game.

When A Girl Turns Three — Family Portrait Photography at Chisholm Creek Park

Family-Portrait-Photography-in-Wichita_0447

It is both a privilege and a blessing to photograph families as their babies grow into children. We have photographed Karter since she was in her mom’s tummy. From that maternity shoot to her newborn session to shoots through her first year… All the way to this photo session documenting her third birthday: We have seen our well-loved granddaughter grow.

Family-Portrait-Photography-in-Wichita_0448

We love these images from a photo shoot in East Wichita at the Great Plains Nature Center. Karter, like many girls, can rock a hair bow while digging in dirt and playing in fields. That’s part of her charm.

Family-Portrait-Photography-in-Wichita_0450

When I saw this old-school hombre pink wooden ladder at Absolute Vintage Boutique on Maple in West Wichita, I knew it had a little girl waiting to climb it in a beautiful field! I love when that happens. 🙂

Know any three year-olds? We’d love to find just the right setting and prop for them. Maybe a wooden sailboat by a pond? Maybe a superhero cape? Photo shoots should be as unique as the children they are featuring. At Marking the Moment Photography we take this seriously.

Family-Portrait-Photography-in-Wichita_0449

And we believe that a few balloons always makes an occasion more festive. Karter and her cousins are our loves; but we approach every kids portrait photography session as a privilege. We have the happiest job on Earth. We get to sit on furniture — in a field!

When Homes Need Love

Family hug with young parents and young son on green grass with lake in background

Leon is a Ninja. He belongs to the Wichita BNI (Business Networking International) chapter of the Networking Ninjas. You have to be quiet with a certain degree of stealth to be a ninja. Leon could pull it off. His deep voice served him well in play-by-play announcing in sports broadcasting. But he’s not full of chatter. His calm and reserve, along with his height and his million watt smile make you notice him. And when you do, you know, Leon is one of the good guys.

Dramatic sky in background while dad swings young son in the air

Leon is dad to Kai, nearly three, and husband to Angela. We had the pleasure of photographing their family at a shoot recently, along with Angela’s parents, known to grandson Kai as Mooney and Pockets. It’s shoots like this one that make our job a treat. You know when the parents go down the slide in a playful and relaxed manner with their child that it’s going to be a fun shoot. They are an active family and enjoy swimming and hiking… especially in Hawaii where they recently lived.

Leon has an interesting work life as President of Professional Home Buyers. His company does just what its title suggests- pretty straightforward. But I knew very little about how this process worked. They offer a great service, primarily in two ways: 1) they sell un-listable homes quickly, getting owners out of a bad situation and 2) they help buyers who can’t finance a home now, but who can work toward that goal in 6-12 months, or even two years, through a “rent to own” situation.

Grandparents with grandson sitting on grass with lake in background

Professional Home Buyers purchases homes that need an owner. I view them as sort of a Humane Society for homes that have been abandoned, foreclosed on, or left to relatives who just can’t handle the commitment of a home… or who don’t care to. Along comes this company who pays cash for the home, consequently closing on a contract in as little as seven days. Yep. A week, though typically it can take 7-30 days. But anyone who has bought or sold a home knows that timeframe is a gift. The  seller gets out of  payments they don’t want or can no longer handle. And the home gets rehabbed. Like HGTV-quality rehabbed, into a proud home again. And some of these homes are offered as rent to own homes to buyers who aren’t currently possessed of the healthiest credit rating, but who can use these months as a renter to give their credit score the same sort of overhaul the house received.

I’ve seen the signs.: “We buy homes for cash.” You have, too. And I was skeptical. Who has cash like that just sitting around? And why do they buy homes with it? It turns out that reputable companies run by honest, hardworking people like Leon do this. And it’s a good thing. A service, both to homes, sellers and buyers. This process is not for everyone. But for the right people, and the right homes, this process is a lifesaver. And that makes Leon just a bit of a superhero. Not as much of a superhero as Kai. But still. Luckily they both have Angela to keep them in line.

The inventory of homes that Professional Home Buyers has, and even a glimpse of upcoming projects, can be viewed at ProHomeBuyer.com  Know of a home that needs occupants due to abandonment, foreclosure, a death or probate issues? Know anyone who wants to own a home but needs a bit of time to work on their credit? Call Leon, it may be the only time you get to speak with an actual ninja on the phone. 🙂

Celebrate!

I like a full house.

I like the sounds and the energy of family and friends celebrating big moments — like the safety and health of a premature grandson.

Or celebrating a winning season of the local team. Go Shox!

Wichita Family Photographers: Heidi

You know how at every party there is a person you don’t yet know, but you want to? You know, the one in the middle of the room with the warm smile and great laugh who is cracking everyone up. We met her recently. She’s a blast, and her name is Heidi. We photographed Heidi and her “baby” Ellie. Ellie is cute and has nice clothes. But Heidi is the one who gets the party started. 🙂

Wichita_Family_Photographers_20121208_0068

We are overplaying Heidi’s fun side for effect. She is a bright, able and intelligent banking supervisor. But during a photo shoot, it’s fun that we’re looking for, and Heidi was a delight.

She loves her dog, loves her twin sister, loves her family. And she is a beauty.

Wichita_Family_Photographers_20121208_0039

When we think of Heidi it is with a smile at how she climbed, romped, ran and even danced in the park during our shoot — despite a bitter wind and a frigid temperature. And she smiled and enjoyed herself the entire time. We enjoyed ourselves too. Because that’s the gift that these people bring to the party: Joy, fun and a great vibe.

Brynlee and Kolbie are younger twin sisters.

They, all three, are delights.

This family is great about letting us try new things. We always enjoy our shoots when them. And we can’t wait to photograph the twins when they are walking, Hayden as she is growing, and the whole family as they are being awesome.
