Carlos, Kibbles and Their People

We have a sweet dog who has kept me going through the loss of a parent, who has lovingly watched over our grandchildren from their infancy and who, just as your dog does for you, loves us unfailingly. Lexi is, most of the time, a well behaved dog.

One weekend, though, we boarded her at our trusted vet’s kennel while we worked with a bride in Kansas City. Upon our return, Hannah informed us that Lexi had figured out how to undo the clasp on the doors and had treated herself to free roam of the place on Saturday after staff went home. Instead of delivering this news with disdain, Hannah smiled her pretty, slightly shy smile. Her gentleness allowed us to feel okay about our dog’s misbehavior. And I’ve always remembered that.

Hannah, a beautiful young woman, is married to her high school sweetheart, Tyler. And Carlos and Kibbles round out their cute family.

Hannah and Tyler could have easily missed meeting each other. Hannah had always lived in Derby, KS and attended Derby schools. She moved right before her senior year in high school. “A tough time to move!” I commented. “It was hard. But it worked out,” she said with that sweet smile, and glanced at Tyler, whom she met during their shared senior year.

Tyler is a quiet guy who loves the outdoors. He is a fire sprinkler installer. And this, if you have ever lived through a fire, you realize is a hugely important job.

Hannah loves that Tyler enjoys the outdoors. And though Tyler appreciates the same quality in Hannah, his favorite thing about her is her eyes. They love hanging out together, especially outdoors. They love riding horses. But even a walk outside with their pals Carlos and Kibbles makes them happy.

Carlos is a lap dog, preferring to stay near his people. Kibbles, though, is spunky and outgoing and will gladly leave Hannah and Tyler for a bit if a good squirrel chase is in the offering.

I know Lexi is in good hands with Hannah. And that means the world to me. We should all be so lucky as to have a Hannah in our lives. I know that’s how Carlos and Kibbles feel. And Tyler, too.

Wichita Family Photographers: Dog-n-Jog

20130420_WICHITA_FAMILY_PHOTOGRAPHERS_0001.jpg

On Saturday morning, Sedgwick County Park was awash with joggers — both canine and human. Indian Hills Animal Clinic has hosted this event and donated proceeds to the Kansas Humane Society for 3 years now. This was our first time attending. But we’ll be back. 🙂

We did not run. Maybe next year. This year we mingled with: Gucci and Grace, Little Bit, Jonah, Jewels and Hallie, among others.

As with another fundraiser we attend each fall, Woofstock, we notice and love the energy present when so many people are gathered with their dogs. It’s a happy vibe!

The woman with Gucci and Grace (pictured in tutus) and Little Bit, seemed familiar. Turns out she was the adoption counselor who helped us bring our girl Lexi home three years ago. Today our paths crossed and we are featuring her dogs in our blog. Pets — they bring richness to our lives even in ways we would never predict.

Wichita Photographers: Snow Day!

The word snow, like so many things, is a symbol that means many different things to each of us. This week, I got a reminder of what people in the northern climes put up with much of the winter. We, who live in Wichita, Kansas, are lucky in the sense that we don’t usually have to deal with much snow in the winter months, and when we do, it’s usually only a few weeks out of the season.

For kids, there are never enough snow days! This week, when I was outside shoveling snow, I was amazed at all the shouts, screams and laughter that was coming from all around the neighborhood. It was nice. The kids had a snow day from school, and they were out enjoying it in full force.

At this point in my life (and the season), I am still able to view the snow as a welcome sight; a prediction of fun to come. As soon as I can find my boots, get dressed in suitable protective clothing, find my gloves, dig out that winter coat, put it all on, and then, if I’m not too exhausted, I’ll actually go out in it. Oh yeah, I almost forgot my camera.

Riverside Park in Wichita is beautiful any time of year.

Wichita Family Photographers: Luke, Kiara and Kisa

Kiara is ten. And full of surprises: Her favorite show is Tom and Jerry. She likes math. She enjoys doing sit-ups.

Things that are not surprising: She loves her dad. She loves their dog, Kisa. When we asked her what she loves most about her dad, she cupped his chin and sweetly replied “his beard.”

BL_NAG20121120_0028

Luke is an interesting guy, too. He travels internationally for Cessna Aircraft, but spending time with “his girls” is a priority in his life. He is a mixture of a loving dad and fierce warrior. (He IS training several hours a day for an upcoming warrior run.) He sensed that Kisa was their perfect companion; he traveled two days through an ice storm to pick her up from Missouri. Kiara was three when Kisa arrived to their family. And they’ve been close ever since.

BL_NAG20121120_0026

Luke compromised on shortening the spelling of Kiara and Kisa from their Japanese origins, but it’s obvious that he will never compromise as the protector and head of their family. All three are lucky to have one another. And we were lucky to enjoy a late autumn afternoon with them.

Maybe one day we’ll get to spend a snowy day photographing this family. Kisa loves the snow; here is a photograph Luke took of her out in her element. Gorgeous, huh?

Photographer Meet Dog: Woofstock 2012

Marking the Moment Photography went on a field trip today and headed to Sedgwick County Park for Kansas Humane Society’s annual fundraiser, Woofstock. We packed up my Little Sister (from Big Brothers and Big Sisters- another great non-profit that deserves your love), our granddaughter, our sweet dog who came to us from the Humane Society… and extra layers… it was chilly, and headed out.

We met all sorts of dogs! Here is a blog of mainly photos, because these sweet faces and wagging tails don’t need words to impress you.

We met dogs staring… with no-nonsense stares… and adoring gazes.

We met big dogs… and bigger dogs.

We met small dogs.

Long-nosed dogs and Groucho Marx-eyebrowed dogs.

A baby dog with nurses.

Dancing dogs and adoptable dogs.

Dogs who find comfort in groups.

And individual dogs seeking new friends.

Spider dogs and spotted dogs.

And dogs on wheels.

If you enjoy Woofstock, leave a comment to let us know what draws you there and what you enjoy once there. If you’ve never been and live in Wichita or nearby, remember this great event for next autumn. There will be a dog waiting there to make you smile.

Marking the Moment Photography enjoys humans as much as dogs. And we love to photograph them. Check out our website: markingthemomentphotography.com to see our work. And keep us in mind when you need a photo session.
