When Networkers Become Clients: Ain’t No Love Like a Nana’s Love

I have known Kristy for several years. We met through BNI (Business Networking International). We belong to one of the Wichita, Kansas chapters- the Referral Rockstars. We have bonded over our mutual love of occasional Netflix binge-watching of Game of Thrones (Winter is coming, you know- Season 6 will arrive in April), a desire to succeed as businesswomen and… our sisterhood as Nanas. We are, we hope, cool Nanas. And we are in it deep- completely committed to these young loves of ours who know us as grandparents.

Before grandchildren stole her heart with their fingers sticky from S’Mores they made in her fireplace, their sweet earthy scent from their hikes through Great Plains Nature Center their giggles, and their mutual admiration for all things Minion, her heart belonged to Fred. She and Fred have known each other since 7th grade and have been married for 47.5 years. And, of course there were her children, Micah and Sarah who spent many of their formative years in Valley Center, Kansas where Kristy has lived for 27 years.

Kristy belongs to the Valley Center Chamber of Commerce. She also co-founded the Valley Center Animal League and volunteers for the organization. She is active at Wichita Uninty Church. She is generous with her time and talents, loving and warm. She is one of those people you feel you’ve known for years once you meet her. Only a few people ever pull this off. Kristy does.

Kristy owns and runs Prairie Song Designs, Inc. in Valley Center. Her company designs websites for clients who appreciate aesthetics. The Prairie Song Designs folks are web designers, not web developers, which sound way more fun! They are also graphic designers.

If you have the opportunity to do business with Kristy, do it. She is a woman of integrity whom I completely trust. And you’ll end up with an attractive web site. I mean… be honest… do you have one of those now??

If you have the opportunity to share a cup of coffee with Kristy, also do it. Ask her about how she went to China for two weeks. Or ask her about how, if she were secretly rich, she would have a small apartment in cities all over the world. This is SO much cooler than having a mansion in one place, right?! Or ask her about how she’d love to live in the mountains. She’ll keep you entertained no matter the topic.

But the way to Kristy’s heart is to ask about her loves… her family. That’s where her treasure is.

When Networkers Become Clients: Curtis Clears the Way

Curtis is one of the first people I encountered when I began attending the networking group I eventually joined.  And for this I am grateful. The Referral Rockstars, a chapter of BNI (Business Networking Intl,) is a group of 50 outgoing, charismatic personalities. Think of the talker in your workplace- the one who doesn’t know a stranger and always has a story to tell. Now think of that person times 50, and you have a glimpse of the energy in this room I now go to regularly. But I recall feeling a little daunted at the first meeting. Perhaps even the second. But… there was Curtis. And Curtis has this calm, gentleness to him. Curtis is a kind, welcoming soul.

He has known his wife, Angela, since they were children. They met at a church camp in Missouri and became friends. Their families moved. Their paths separated a time or two. But they always came back together. And you can tell by being around them that this is because that is where they belong- with each other.  Angela is quiet, but very funny. They are two people of deep convictions and firmly held beliefs. They live out their beliefs and model their faith.

I once asked Angela to tell me her favorite thing about Curtis. She thought for a moment and said, “Oh that would be very, very hard to choose. There are so many things.” Curtis felt a calling to ministry and Angela supported him completely. He is pastor of the Wichita Bible Holiness Church, and their family is committed to their church family. Curtis would love to see the church grow in membership. But it is important to him that the church be strong, not only in number, but also in their outreach.

Curtis and Angela have three sons:

8 year old boy

Travis, age 8

Corey, age 6

and Eric, age 3

But there is more to Curtis than his welcoming spirit, his pastoral qualities and his family life.

Curtis works for CLEARS, Inc., and local company that screens backgrounds for potential employees, volunteers or tenants. Now… how about that for a valuable service? Honestly, this company can save you from becoming entangled with some individuals that could create problems. I know that any time we use and intern or hire an employee to work around our clients,  we will first have CLEARS check their background for trouble signs.

So, see what I mean about Curtis? He clears the way to make room in his life and family for God. He tries his best to clear the way for God to be present to the community. And he works for a company that can clear the way to valuable peace of mind when hiring someone.

Looking for a church home? Curtis would love to talk to you about that. Call: (316) 942-3313. Need a background check? Curtis can help you with that at CLEARS, (316)683- 6861

Lastly, feeling intimidated at a networking function? Look for the kind, gentle souls like Curtis. They’re there- waiting to help.

Client Moment: Christy and her Java

Christy Crites and I met in our chapter of of BNI (Business Networking International), The Referral Rockstars. She is a tiny but mighty, energetic, smart businesswoman with a talent for marketing that I admire… and if we are being totally honest… have copied from time to time. Christy is the owner of Java Salon on Maize Road in west Wichita. She has been making the world more beautiful, one head at a time, for eighteen years, and has run Java for six. Christy has a drive for business and customer service, but she would probably tell you that the secret to her success is the love of what fills her life outside of business: faith and family.

Patrick and I had a blast shooting a family session with her family of four this summer. Christy has a regular practice of going on “adventures” with her two sons in order to spend quality time with them. Sometimes at ten o’clock at night they’ll make a Starbucks run. They hit movies, doughnut shops, Target- and turn these outings into fun events. I heard stories about these outings as she cut my hair and covered my gray. And I knew that some of this should be documented in a family photo session.

We went to Riverside Park, Starbucks and Keeper of the Plains Plaza one beautiful evening. The coffee shop was not as tricky as you’d think- they know her there- from all those adventures. 🙂  And from a number of Sugar Free Caramel Lattes with Soy.

Christy has been with her cute husband, Wally, for sixteen years total, and their 15th wedding anniversary is coming up this month. Sense an adventure on the horizon? I’m guessing it may feature their shared love of wine instead of coffee. But you never know with this girl. Smart girls like her keep you guessing.

As a regular client of Java Salon, I am treated like a queen. I am gently reminded of my upcoming appointment by phone and email. When I arrive I can choose the caffeinated (or decaffeinated) specialty drink that strikes my fancy, and it is served in an actual mug. I can utilize wi-fi to work while there. The service is excellent and the staff are trained and knowledgable. And someone calls a day or two after my appointment to see if I have concerns or questions. When did you get this level of service at a salon? You will at Java. Along with any Redken haircare product you can think of- and thorough instructions on how to use it.

As a small business owner myself, I respect Christy. She, as they say, has got it going on. She markets, networks, styles hair, counsels and mentors her staff, makes coffee while remaining calm. Amazing, since she drinks so much coffee. lol But she also has a deep, rich faith and remains close to her siblings and parents as well as running her own home and family. Rookies- don’t try this at home. At least not all at once. This takes years of trial and error and practice- this ability to gracefully manage so many plates in the air. Or mugs in the air. Kudos to Christy for pulling it off.

If you are looking for a new home for your hair, give Java Salon a try. Call with questions or to make an appointment today.

Edie and Todd: It’s a Soulmate Thing

You may not know this… but I am a Rockstar. Patrick is, too! Really. Okay… well not that kind of rock star. We belong to a professional networking group called BNI (Business Networking International). We joined the Wichita, Kansas chapter called the Referral Rockstars. Yes, this is worthwhile. Yes, it is a commitment in terms of time and money. But finally, yes, we get clients, work and income out of it. It has opened doors to opportunities we would not have had otherwise. And, believe it or not, the meetings are often fun. (This blog is not about BNI, but if you have any questions about it, just contact me.)

I met Edie at the Rockstars. She is a massage therapist at Balance and Harmony Therapeutic Massage on West Street. She is great at her job- several people in our family can attest to this. And she is fun. Edie has a playful, open energy. Edie is not a glass-half-empty sort of woman. This is not to say she is a glass-half-full type, either. Edie is a life-is-grand-the-glass-is-spilling-over-with-blessings sort of woman. And she is colorful- she’ll tell you she has too many jobs to count before she found massage- a field she views as her calling. She has adventured through her life. In fact, she met her husband, Todd, while working a former job at a gas station. That was twenty-six years ago. Edie and Todd have been married for twenty-four of those years. And you only have to be around them briefly to know they are still in love.

They have two grown sons and a “daughter from another mother.” They have four dogs and a cat who all get along. This alone should indicate that Edie’s energy is mellow and not at all diva-like. There’s no way four dogs and a cat would coexist peacefully in a home where the woman of the house was throwing fits.

When I asked Edie what she loves most about Todd, she was quiet for a long moment. She told me she could not choose just one thing. “Okay,” I said, “You can have a couple.”

“He knows exactly how to hold me. Physically. Emotionally. However I need at the time- he knows exactly how to hold me.”

“That’s a good answer,” I replied meaning it. “And the other thing?”

“He know me. And he loves me anyway.”

Yep, they are still in love. My bet is that they always will be. They’ll both tell you that they belong together. As one woman who is blessed enough to be traveling through life with my soulmate, I recognize real love when I see it.

Have a significant other? Do you two have current photos together? Or do you have a special occasion coming up? Marking the Moment Photography would be delighted to work with you and capture some fun moments in photographs that you can enjoy now and hand down as heirlooms. Remember how cool it is to look at photos of your parents and grandparents? Even when we photograph family sessions, we make sure to take the parents aside and get some images of them.
